  Inclement Weather

Monitoring Inclement Weather

The National Weather Service is predicting 10-inch snowfall in the Hampton Roads area beginning early Saturday morning, January 30. If university officials are forced to shut down operations because of inclement weather conditions, the campus community will be notified via NSU’s Emergency Alert System – Send Word Now. Messages will also be posted on the NSU website at NSUalert.com, the main university switchboard, WNSB 91.1 FM and local radio and television channels. Continue to monitor these communications channels as the university’s operational status may change rapidly.

In the case of inclement weather and the university closes, students living in the residence halls will have their meals delivered to their residence halls. Residence life staff will provide information on times and locations of meal deliveries. The staff will also provide other information on emergency operations for the residence halls. Remember: we are here 24 hours a day regardless of the situation. Residential students who may need assistance during the incident, should contact a staff member in the residence halls or the NSU Police Department.

The Facilities Management Department’s essential personnel reporting time is in effect for the predicted inclement weather. All essential personnel are expected to report as instructed by their supervisors. Facilities Management crews will be working around the clock to keep the campus safe and secure.

If the university closes, this usually means that classes and most activities will be cancelled as well, including special events and activities at the New Student Center and possibly athletic events. Again, stay connected to the website, radio or television stations for the most up to date details.

If the weather predictions are accurate, university officials do not want students, faculty and staff out and about. Hampton Roads residents have been advised to staff off the roads if they don’t have to drive in snowy and icy conditions.

NSU closing information will also be posted on the following:

  • Send Word Now (NSU Emergency Alert System)
  • NSUalert.com
  • E-Daily
  • University’s switchboard voice mail (823-8600)

If severe weather threatens operations at Norfolk State University, monitor the following television and radio stations for official NSU information:

    • WVEC Channel 13
    • WAVY Channel 10
    • LNC Channel 5
